Project Sharan is an offshoot of PEHL (Prime Education Health Learning Services), a non-profit organization. PEHL implements educational, vocational, and counselling programs for children in special circumstances and special needs. They also work in areas of livelihood generation, child abuse prevention, rural health, and calamity relief. Through project Sharan, HOH partners with PEHL to provide educational and medical support to children who have lost one or both parents to COVID.
Sharan Impact
The ongoing COVID pandemic has destroyed many families, leaving children vulnerable due to the unfortunate loss of one or both parents. Project Sharan provides long-term assistance to these children in their time of need and grief by sponsoring their education, providing online and offline counselling, and fulfilling specific requirements or medical needs.
Currently, we support over 120 children in different states of India (Maharashtra, UP, Karnataka, West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu). We offer these children constant online and offline support. Our support includes:
» Tuition fees
» Books, stationery, and other supplies
» Medical assistance
» Grief counselling
» Nutrition
Success Stories
Deepali Kundale — a COVID widow was begging door to door to collect funds to continue her son’s education. Once under PEHL’s umbrella this has been taken care of.
Ankit Kumar — an engineering student was about to discontinue his education to provide financial support to his family after he lost his father to COVID. Now PEHL has committed to take care of the financial expense for the rest of his education so he can pursue his dreams.
Mandakini Dubey — lost her husband to COVID. She got some temporary financial support from her brother. With PEHL’s assistance her son is continuing his education.
Future Challenges
Going forward, we need to continue our financial support for increasing costs of transport and travel, support staff for regular follow-ups, teachers, and counsellors. As well as support more beneficiaries.
We also need to increase outlays as many educational institutions are unlikely to extend discount or fee waivers in the upcoming academic year.
Some of our children will head towards professional courses, so we will need to account for the rising cost of these courses.
