Projects – Eastside College Preparatory School

Empowering first-generation, low-income students with a 10-year pathway from high school to college and career success.

Location & History:

Eastside College Preparatory School is located in East Palo Alto, California. Founded in 1996, Eastside celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The school was created with a mission to serve students from underserved communities and help them become the first in their families to attend a four-year college.

Core Focus of the Project:

Eastside was established as an independent high school committed to helping low-income, first-generation students prepare for and succeed in four-year colleges. Over the years, the school has expanded its support model based on the needs of its students as they progress through college and begin their professional careers.

Key components of Eastside’s model include:

  • A robust alumni support program, offering college and career coaches who guide students after graduation
  • An extended school day (8:30 am to 5:00 pm)
  • Year-round learning, with all students participating in a summer session
  • A boarding program for students who benefit from a structured and supportive residential environment

HOH Partnership: When & Why

HOH began partnering with Eastside in 2024, making its first grant to assist with college expenses for an Eastside graduate. This support aligns with HOH’s mission to empower first-generation students to complete their education and pursue meaningful careers.

Impact of HOH Support

To date, HOH has provided two grants toward Eastside’s college scholarship program. This funding directly addresses the rising costs of attending college and helps ensure that graduates have the financial resources needed to persist and complete their degrees.

A few measurable outcomes:

  • 71% of Eastside alumni earn a bachelor’s degree
  • By comparison, only 21% of low-income, first-generation students nationwide complete college
  • Eastside students outperform even the highest-income quartile, whose college completion rate is 69%

Vision for the Next Five Years

Over the past three decades, Eastside has expanded from a college-preparatory high school to a 10-year commitment model that supports students through high school, college, and into their early careers. This approach is guided by three pillars:
  • College Preparatory Program
  • College Coaching Program
  • Career Coaching Program
